About the producers role – Denimira Deneva with a lecture in the interest club “Video Game Development”
Denimira Deneva, who is a producer at CCP Games, was the second guest of the school club “Video Game Development” organized by ARC Academy. Her lecture was devoted to business models in the industry and the role of the producer in the creation of a video game.
She told the students about the steps her career has taken – from being a student at NHTV University of Applied Science in Breda, through her internships at studios, working for companies in Spain, Taiwan, and Korea, to her current position at CCP Games in London.
Deneva explained that the role of a video game producer is to help the team and the process move in the right direction and at the right pace according to the available budget.
She presented impressive data, according to which the game business is surpassing all financial forecasts, and by 2023 it is expected to reach more than 200 billion dollars in revenue. The gaming industry is currently valued at nearly $109 billion, which is equal to the valuation of the music, film, and television industries combined.
Denimira introduced students to the main business models in games – Pay to Play, Subscription, Free to Play, and Microtransactions & Battle Pass. She also gave examples of the most successful games from different models, including GTA, Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption, Destiny, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Overwatch, etc. The producer explained that there are games that started with one business model that they later changed, like Fortnite and Destiny 2.
Deneva predicts that streaming, which is currently booming, will continue to develop as a successful business model in the next few years.
After the presentation, Denimira Deneva answered a number of students questions from related to the processes in the game industry and her work on titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty.
The next guest lecture within the “Video Game Development” interest club will be on December 8, at 7 pm, with Plamen Kokanov, senior programmer at SAP Labs Bulgaria and co-founder of the indie studio Awkward Pixel. The meeting will be held online on Zoom.
